Strong web writing requires an understanding of search engine optimization, good use of keywords, and clarity in writing. Develop a portfolio to prove your writing skill.

Becoming a paid web writer requires practice and persistence. A good SEO (search engine optimization) copywriter will get many online writing job offers – the trick is making sure the world knows that your internet copywriting skills are excellent. Developing a portfolio of copy for the web will both demonstrate your skills, and get your name circulating to potential clients.

SEO Copywriting Basics

Writing for the web is very different from writing for other media. The audience you’re writing for is willing to leave your article or web page with the click of a mouse. Moreover, they use a search engine to find your web copy. Keep the following internet writing tips in mind:

  • Keep paragraphs short and clear. Your reader should be able to get the main idea of each paragraph at a glance.
  • Focus on keywords. Always keep in mind the purpose of your article, page, or blog post, and incorporate relevant keywords into the text. It’s a good idea to begin by looking for similar pages yourself – what do you type into a search engine?
  • Keep web pages short. Like long paragraphs, long web pages lose reader attention quickly. When writing online copy, focus on avoiding the need for the ‘page down’ key. However, using a ‘next’ button isn’t any better – instead, break the content into a group of several pages, instead of one long article.

Practice Writing for the Web

The best way to hone your online writing skills is to use them. Write articles for free site (including ezine articles for other businesses), create a blog and post to it frequently, and edit or write articles on Wikipedia or other direct-to-publish sites. Focus on improving your spelling, grammar, and punctuation as you write.

Build a Portfolio of Strong Internet Copy

A portfolio of your online writing, whether you are already getting paid to write on the web or writing for free, will help you build your online writing career in several ways.

  • Higher online visibility. The more you write, the more chances that potential clients will see your work.
  • Improved web copywriting skills. As noted above, you can only improve your ability to write on the web if you write on the web.
  • Marketing is repetition. The more a prospective client sees your name, the more likely they will remember it when they need some killer web copy written. You don’t have to be annoying to capitalize on repetition, just be persistent by writing more.

Online Writing Leads to Offline Writing

Developing a strong portfolio of killer web copy can lead to other kinds of writing jobs, as well. Demonstrate your ability to write online content and you could soon be writing small business plans, marketing materials, and press releases and, if you have the right background, grant applications and ghost writing. Dedication to your online copywriting will take you as far as you want it to.
